The culmination of something, we’re not sure what. Questlove’s association with David Murray goes back decades, to a live performance in London and an appearance on an early Roots record. Questlove’s association with Ray is somewhat more recent but no less profound. As Questlove expanded his achievements and fame from musician to entrepreneur to author to Academy Award winning filmmaker to cultural icon, he’s always highlighted and collaborated with creatives he deems worthy. After hearing about our label during his work with Steve Mandel, he decided WE were worthy of his time as one of his creative homes. So it was, that on one day in late Summer, 2022, Quest, David and Ray, with no rehearsal or planning, sat down in Reservoir Studios, took their places at their instruments, and for the next few hours locked into some of the most otherworldly music we’ve heard. When the recording session was over and the musicians left, it was like a typhoon came through. Everything was changed. We can’t go back. That led us to think hard, always a dangerous proposition: we need to be as direct as possible at making our point that Ray is a top pianist! Solo piano. That great tradition from Art Tatum through Keith Jarrett always was the most powerful platform to elicit the “wows”. And so one day in the fall of 2022, Ray came to Reservoir Studios, sat down at the Steinway piano that was delivered for him (by Steinway) and barely got up for the next two hours. There are some experiences which defy words. Listening to Ray release a torrent of music quite unlike anything we’ve heard, was one such event. The pieces were part classical, part jazz, part pop and all Ray. We couldn’t bear to leave one note unreleased so….the first JMI box set, in which Ray will join Mr. Jarrett as a rare talent who can make you totally forget you’re hearing solo piano because his music suffuses the mind with less earthbound sensations. From new classical to heavy metal to all manner of improvisational music, Tyshawn is a label favorite and just a mind-blowing multi-hyphenate. Included in his talents is the consistent integration of some of the best young musicians into his many bands. For a while his sextet included a young woman who played the vibraphone like a maniacal dervish, intent with the most laser-like focus we’ve seen. She is Sasha Berliner, a San Francisco native who is bound for stardom. Sasha put together the quintet to record this album from her many high-level musical associates: James Francies and Julius Rodriguez on keyboards; Burniss Travis II on bass; Marcus Gilmore on drums and Jaleel Shaw on alto sax. Thana Alexa contributed a vocal on one song. The first JMI record to be recorded outside Reservoir Studio, this one was tracked and mixed at Ben Kane’s Electric Garden in Brooklyn. These shows, complete with guests, coalesced a network which grew out of the Suga Steve nickname bestowed on our co-founder on account of his role on the popular \u003cem\u003eQuestlove Supreme\u003c\/em\u003e podcast. During one such Instagram live show, we interviewed and heard a bit of piano playing from a Seattle-based student at Evergreen College. His name is Antero Sievert and he had a delicate, deliberate and abstractly beautiful tone on the piano. We brought him to NYC in the Summer of 2018 to record a solo piano album but he arranged a few of the songs with strings, led by the great violinist Yoo-Jin Park, and trombone, ably played by Jeffery Miller. The cover photo is of a statue which has been in New York’s Central Park for decades. Named after the prolific marijuana dealer and trombonist Mezz Mezzrow, the club was owned and operated by the folks who run Small’s Jazz club down the block. In the 1990s, the location had been a bar which served drinks in test-tubes. But on this sultry night, the place featured a duet with one of our favorite musicians, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and Helen Sung, a Texan pianist of whom we hadn’t heard before. We ambled down the stairs and over the next hour or so were entranced by Helen’s fast and precise piano playing, which poured off the instrument like beautiful and complex webs of sound. Marquis Hill had blown us away a couple years earlier with his definitive album statement on the current Chicago jazz scene \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe Way We Play\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. We subbed in Marquis for Jeremy and presto: everybody’s waltz. The material on the record was composed as a song-cycle to mirror the stages of a human life. It is the first JMI release pressed at Gotta Groove pressing plant in Ohio which is developing a reputation as the audiophile label’s choice. Murray represented a major step up for JMI as regards his history in this music. With over 200 LPs as a leader and hundreds more as a sideman, not to mention decades of critically lauded performances, Mr. Murray is simply one of our musical heroes. Indeed, during a period of months in 2020, Mr. Mandel did a series of Instagram live shows each Monday, playing only LPs from Mr. Murray’s prolific output. He called the show Murray Mondays. That’s why it was such a happy coincidence that after years of living abroad, Mr. Murray was moving back to New York City and amenable to recording this solo tenor saxophone and bass clarinet session for us. From the moment he ambled into Reservoir Studio on December 4, 2021, unassumingly unpacking his horns, until he regaled us with stories about other heroes Jerry Garcia and Bob Thiele, Mr. Murray was a dream fulfilled. The recordings were pristine, with nary a dud among the original compositions and improvisations. In classic JMI fashion, we matched him in a trio with other favorites we wanted on the label. Tyshawn Sorey on drums and Matt Brewer on bass had both made our list with knockout avant garde performances at New York’s most active and searching venue, the Jazz Gallery. In 2018, Daru had featured on JMI-4-S1 and we had a blast in the studio. Later that year, DJ Harrison and our label owners met at a series of events, including a memorable show DJ put on at the Mercury Lounge. When we learned that Harrison and Jones had both collaborated with label favorite Jack White, it got us thinking: what other rock n’ roll settings could they kill? And can we release some rock ‘n ’roll and still be a jazz label? First we realized that DJ’s keyboard prowess and love of vintage gear make him a perfect fit for an electric analog keyboard. One of our favorite sounding analog keyboards growing up was the trippy, circus sounds produced by Ray Manzarek’s 1960s Continental Combo Organ together with the Fender Piano Bass. Daru’s seamless moves from rock to jazz to hip hop make him the perfect John Densmore to DJ’s Manzarek. But who could do the guitar? Not some Robby Krieger imitator: he’s inimitable. An old friend of Mr. Mandel’s, legendary ace axman Doyle Bramhall II, Steve insisted, would be perfect. One problem: Doyle was then and now the lead guitarist for Eric Clapton’s busy touring schedule. Anyway, in 2018 we tracked Harrison and Jones at Reservoir Studios where we not only got killer takes on the Doors’ When The Music’s Over, but a tight and soulful recording of an original Mandel\/Hohl song called I Don’t Fuck Around. We banked the 2” reels and waited for Mr. Bramhall to fit us into his schedule. And we waited. Months passed, then years. By 2022, some of us had given up waiting. But not Mr. Mandel. He got his man and on one memorable day that year, Doyle, Steve and Doyle’s partner Elle McPherson convened in The Bridge Studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. To say Doyle laced these tracks speaks too highly of laces. Just buy this record and listen. It’s our first 12” single, it’s mastered at 45 r.p.m. for glorious sound, and it’s a wild ride. In November, 2019 we recorded Mike, his high school best friend - bassist Max Gerl, and a gaggle of other young musicians at a new Los Angeles analog studio called Space. Mike, a flamboyant character with an at-times absurd sense of humor is easy to mistake as stylish while missing his tremendous substance. In the spirit of glorious futility which infuses everything we do, we produced this 7” single, using an edited version of the foot-stomping bebop of David Murray’s Ninno (named after a friend’s recently deceased dog) and 5 Minute Joint, a slice of futuristic funk\/jazz we originally thought would not fit on the Plumb box set.
