After nine records, we had our process, confidence and profile high enough to swing for the fences: the tenor titan David Murray. Murray represented a major step up for JMI as regards his history in this music. With over 200 LPs as a leader and hundreds more as a sideman, not to mention decades of critically lauded performances, Mr. Murray is simply one of our musical heroes. Indeed, during a period of months in 2020, Mr. Mandel did a series of Instagram live shows each Monday, playing only LPs from Mr. Murray’s prolific output. He called the show Murray Mondays. That’s why it was such a happy coincidence that after years of living abroad, Mr. Murray was moving back to New York City and amenable to recording this solo tenor saxophone and bass clarinet session for us. From the moment he ambled into Reservoir Studio on December 4, 2021, unassumingly unpacking his horns, until he regaled us with stories about other heroes Jerry Garcia and Bob Thiele, Mr. Murray was a dream fulfilled. The recordings were pristine, with nary a dud among the original compositions and improvisations. In 2018, Daru had featured on JMI-4-S1 and we had a blast in the studio. Later that year, DJ Harrison and our label owners met at a series of events, including a memorable show DJ put on at the Mercury Lounge. When we learned that Harrison and Jones had both collaborated with label favorite Jack White, it got us thinking: what other rock n’ roll settings could they kill? And can we release some rock ‘n ’roll and still be a jazz label? First we realized that DJ’s keyboard prowess and love of vintage gear make him a perfect fit for an electric analog keyboard. One of our favorite sounding analog keyboards growing up was the trippy, circus sounds produced by Ray Manzarek’s 1960s Continental Combo Organ together with the Fender Piano Bass. Daru’s seamless moves from rock to jazz to hip hop make him the perfect John Densmore to DJ’s Manzarek. But who could do the guitar? Not some Robby Krieger imitator: he’s inimitable. An old friend of Mr. Mandel’s, legendary ace axman Doyle Bramhall II, Steve insisted, would be perfect. One problem: Doyle was then and now the lead guitarist for Eric Clapton’s busy touring schedule. Anyway, in 2018 we tracked Harrison and Jones at Reservoir Studios where we not only got killer takes on the Doors’ When The Music’s Over, but a tight and soulful recording of an original Mandel\/Hohl song called I Don’t Fuck Around. We banked the 2” reels and waited for Mr. Bramhall to fit us into his schedule. And we waited. Months passed, then years. By 2022, some of us had given up waiting. But not Mr. Mandel. He got his man and on one memorable day that year, Doyle, Steve and Doyle’s partner Elle McPherson convened in The Bridge Studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. To say Doyle laced these tracks speaks too highly of laces. Just buy this record and listen. It’s our first 12” single, it’s mastered at 45 r.p.m. for glorious sound, and it’s a wild ride. That was a good idea because it highlighted the possibility that instrumental music can generate popular hits. In the spirit of glorious futility which infuses everything we do, we produced this 7” single, using an edited version of the foot-stomping bebop of David Murray’s Ninno (named after a friend’s recently deceased dog) and 5 Minute Joint, a slice of futuristic funk\/jazz we originally thought would not fit on the Plumb box set. We first worked with Warren back in 2007 for Brown Brothers Recordings when he was just a newbie on the New York scene and have watched with amazement as he’s ascended to his rightful position as one of the giants of the current vibraphone. There are many virtuosos out there but Warren’s complete lack of judgment beyond “good” and “bad” make him one of the most pleasant people to be around. In a perfect world we’d record Warren Wolf records all day, every day.
